Sgraffito Leaf Bowl

Sgraffito Leaf Bowl

I created this ceramic bowl using the process of sgraffito. Sgraffito is a technique where you apply slip onto an unfired ceramic body. You then scratch onto the top layer of the surface to relieve the exterior underneath.

My design is based on a collection of green leaves. As part of my collection project.

After designing the layout and surface pattern of my bowl, I decided that using different types of mark making using the sgraffito technique would create interest. Using a variety of tools created contrasting patterns and different details. My bowl is made from red clay, with a white slip overlay.
